Reflections

Pierre Francastel(1900~1970) regards ‘Space of Art’ as a symbolic system of social space other than just an independent aesthetic.
The exhibition ‘Reflections’ is to show stories about modern people and a modern society reflected by contemporary art.
‘Reflection’ is defined as a ‘reflected image of society, which is newly interpreted through two different cultures.
This project is an exchange project hosted by NEAR Dangsan Studio based in Korea and Project Space Philipinas based in Philippine, also attendee of NEAR project. This International project will be a joint project by two project teams consisted of two artists each from Korea and Phillippine with the experiences of visiting each other’s countries.
This experience will not only give a good chance to look at contemporary society through communications and sympathy but also to reflect those images to art between the two parties.
This project will focus on exhibiting whole process and results of discussions about cultural and social issues between young artists from two countries. Co-working between Korea and Philippine will lead this project to show contemporary arts in various forms such as media art.
By using media that citizens are already familiar with, more citizens will become close to works of art.

Particular emphasis has been placed on International cultural exchanging markets including America, Great Britain, France, West Germany, and Japan only among Asian markets.
It has been 60 years since Philippine and Korea have diplomatic relationship this year and people’s interests towards globalization has been grown as well. Foreign workers, overseas brothers, and international marriages have been increased, which shows that more people become interested in Asian cultures to create the society coexisted with each other.
With growing awareness of the importance of the multiculturalism policy, there has been systematic approach to developing multiculturalism policy. It is time to promote multiculturalism sensibility and broaden cultural exchange.
Young artists in Incheon will be able to make inroads into foreign markets artists and also will provide people a great opportunity to experience similarity and difference of two different cultures through this International exchange project with Philippine artists.

피에르 프랑카스텔은 ‘미술’이라는 공간을 독립된 미적 공간이 아니라 사회적 공간과 연계된 상징체계로 간주한다. 전시 ‘Reflections'는 현대 미술이라는 거울에 투영시킨 현대인, 현대 사회에 대한 이야기들을 담아내고자 한다. 또한, 여기서 'reflection(반영, 반성)'이란, 서로 다른 두 나라의 시선을 통해 새롭게 해석되는 우리 사회의 ’거울 이미지‘를 의미하기도 한다. 본 프로젝트는 전시를 주관하고 있는 NEAR 당산 스튜디오와 NEAR project에 참여하고 있는 필리핀 마닐라의 Project Space Pillipinas(http://projectspacepilipinas.blogspot.com/)와의 국제 교류전으로서 한국과 필리핀 작가 2명씩으로 구성된 두 프로젝트 팀이 인천과 마닐라, 두 도시에 체류 경험을 토대로 공동 프로젝트(co-work)로 진행될 예정이다. 그들의 소통과 교감을 통해 타자의 시선으로 우리가 살아가고 있는 현대 사회를 새롭게 바라보고, 미술에 반영하는 계기로 삼는다. 양국 젊은 작가들은 문화적, 사회적 특수성에 대한 논의와 작업을 통해 탄생된 결과물과 그 생산 과정을 보여주는 작품을 전시한다. 이는 사전 기술 교류를 통해 공동 작업으로 이끌어내어 미디어 부분의 예술 창작물로 발표하게 된다. 미디어는 시민들이 예술에 좀 더 친숙하게 다가갈 수 있는 매체이므로 더 많은 시민들이 예술을 향유할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것이다.
우리의 국제 문화 교류는 미국, 영국, 프랑스, 서독 등 일부 서방 국가와 아시아 지역에서는 일본에 지나칠 정도로 치중되어 왔다. 최근 들어 해외 이주민 노동자, 해외 동포 등의 유입과 농촌의 외국인과의 결혼으로 인해 아시아 문화에 관심을 갖게 되고, 그들과 공존할 수 있는 사회를 모색하게 되었다. 국가적으로도 다문화 정책에 움직임들이 보이는 가운데, 다문화 감수성을 증진시키고 문화 교류의 폭을 확산시킬 필요가 있다.
이번 전시는 필리핀의 젊은 작가들과의 교류를 통해, 인천의 젊은 작가들이 국제 미술계로 진출할 수 있는 발판을 마련하고 양국 문화의 동질성과 차별성을 기회를 제공할 것이다.
